DIY Felt Ball Garland

We are kind of obsessed with garlands around here and we are also obsessed with those cute felt balls that have become so popular. We thought it would be fun to share a DIY tutorial on how to make your own felt balls and garland! It’s so easy you will be thinking of all the different holidays and places in your house you can make them for!

All you need to get started is some yarn, felt roving, panty hoes and if you want to turn your felt balls into a garland you will need a thicker needle and some string. You can get felt roving at the fabric store, we got ours at Joann’s. Use the yarn as a base for the felt and roll them into small balls. {Note once the felt is wrapped over the yarn it will make the balls a lot bigger so make your yarn balls a little smaller then your desired final size}

Unwind a length of roving and gently pull off or cut “tufts” roughly 5-6 inches in length. Spread the fibers into a thin flat layer with all the strands going in one direction. Pull off another tuft of roving and layer it on top of the first at a 90 degree angle. Repeat this process several more times, criss-crossing 4-6 thin layers. Once the small blanket is created there should be no holes.

Wrap the roving blanket you have created around a yarn ball, making sure there is full coverage of fluffy roving with no bare or thin spots.

Close the roving covered yarn ball in your hand and bring it to the foot of a knee hi panty hose. { You can buy cheap ones at the dollar store, or use up old ones you never wear anymore!} Gently remove your hand from around the ball and tie a small piece of yarn around the hose to secure the ball in place.

When all the balls have been wrapped in the hose, place them in the washing machine, set the water to lowest level and hottest setting. Add a small amount of detergent, about a tablespoon, the exact measurement is not crucial but soap is important in the felting process.

When you take the chain of balls out of the machine, you will see little fibers have come though the mesh of the hose. Snip the tied yarn between the balls, gently peel away the hose removing the ball and roll the ball in your hands to smooth the fibers. That’s it! Now you have your own cute felt balls!

String the felt balls using a needle and string and now you have a darling garland perfect for valentines day or for decorating your little peanuts play rooms!

    Does the yarn have to match the felt roving?

    Amy, no it doesn’t have to match! You can use any color yarn you have!

    Hi Erin!

    That sounds beautiful! We just might need to do that as well! We got our felt roving at Joann’s fabric store. You can also buy it online from Joann’s or many other online stores if you can’t find it locally. Hope that helps!

    Does the yarn need to be made of wool, so that it felts, too? Or will acrylic yarn work?

  6. Betsy says:

    How much roving did you use? I found a bag online that is 1/4 oz. each, just wondering how many yarn balls this would cover?
