Entertaining with Littles | Mountain Dinner

We are so excited to finally be able to share a really fun project we’ve been working on for a long time + a new series her on LP called Entertaining with Littles. We are so passionate about entertaining and hosting parties with our families and we wanted to be able to share that love and some of our tips with all of you. When we think about some of our most cherished memories with our families they involve some type of celebration, party, or a simple get together dinner with our family and friends. This is an intimate time to get away from the stresses of life and just be in the moment with your family + have great conversations with great food!

There are so many styles when it comes to entertaining and we love them all! From lavish sit down formal dinners to casual backyard BBQ’s. There’s a special time and place for them all and we hope to inspire you to entertain in any sort of fashion that fits your lifestyle! And just because you have kids it doesn’t mean that you can’t entertain any more or host more formal parties. Our advice is to plan a dinner party however you wish it to be and just make simple adjustments to make it kid friendly. There is still plenty of room for adult conversations and even adult drinks if you fancy them… just make sure to have options the kids would enjoy as well and you can have the best of both worlds!

Choosing the location you want to host your party can really decide the style + formality of the dinner. This decision might also be based on where is the best place in your home or backyard to entertain and accommodate your guests. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your spaces and if you have limited space like us or just enjoy being outside then consider hosting a dinner in your backyard, a local park or even up in the mountains like we did!

One of the most important things to us when hosting any type of party or dinner is the appetizers! We never skimp on them! Appetizers are actually probably our favorite part about hosting a dinner! This is the time when your guests are arriving and the best conversations are just starting up so great snacks are a must. Our go-to hors d’oeuvres is well curated cheese board with a side of olives or homemade guacamole + salsa and chips! And when it comes to our little peanuts we know that the finger goods are their favorite as well. Anything from fresh fruit to slices of cheese to chips + dip!

When it comes to eating in the mountains we typically think of the traditional camping meals like hot dogs or tin-foil dinners. For our dinner we wanted to change things up a bit and show how you can plan a more formal meal in the mountains as well. It only takes a few things to take your evening from the usual camp-out to a sit-down dinner. It’s as simple as bringing real plates and flatware! We for sure aren’t hating on paper plates and plastic forks… in fact we love them but if you ditch them your dinner in the mountains can easily feel more formal!

ON THE MENU: Picking the right menu for your party is key and we always tend to pick options that lend to the season or atmosphere. For our dinner in the mountains we decided to go with homemade chili not only because it’s a perfect dish for fall but because it’s also a great meal that you can pre-pair at home and then warm-up on the campfire (tip: chili also feeds a lot of mouths and is great for a big group!) Along with the chili we had homemade skillet bread and roasted veggies. For the pick eaters you can also have some hot dogs on hand that they can even roast themselves! Win win all around!

When entertaining with littles it’s also important to provide some sort of activity or way to keep them busy. This will make it more enjoyable for the adults as well! The great thing about doing a dinner in the mountains is there is so much entertainment all around. The kids can run around the camp ground for hours collecting all sorts of natures goodies while you are preparing the meal and setting the table. And of course an evening in the mountains wouldn’t be complete without roasting marsh mellows around the campfire. Truly the best time to get in a few extra cuddles and enjoy being in the moment with them.
