Today we have our editor, Megan Bailey, sharing a recent party she designed + threw for her four year old son Beckham!
“May is party season at our house! Both of my boys have May birthdays and this year it was Beckham’s turn to have a ‘big’ party. As an event designer and party planner of course I started thinking at the first of the year what cool theme we could do for his party. After brain storming some really hip ideas I realized that maybe he should be involved in deciding the theme. He is now old enough to understand what a party is all about and even though I wanted to do something that was different and hasn’t been done before… I realized that I didn’t care if it was the most creative theme ever. I cared that Beckham had the best day ever! It was no surprise when I asked him what kind of party he wanted when he answered ‘Transformers’! To say this boy is obsessed is for sure an understatement. All day every day it’s transformers in our house. I wasn’t instantly thrilled with the theme but if I was going to throw a transformer birthday party it was going to be different then a cheesy action figure party. I decided to go with a modern transformer feel using white, black, red, yellow and royal blue as our color palette.
We played up the ‘autobot’ and ‘decepticon’ symbols starting with the invitations and carrying the design through to the cupcake toppers, drink wrappers and favor labels. To decorate I kept things pretty simple with white linens and colored square paper plates. My favorite part about the table design was the large round balloons that I got from my favorite party supply store Shop Sweet Lulu along with the cute colored tassels!
When it comes to little peanuts they are all about the food and treats! The treat table I created included an Optimus Prime cake made by the amazing team at One Sweet Slice! Seriously though?! I had custom cookies made by Sugary Sweet Cupcakes and Treats using the transformer symbols. Jen is so amazing to work with and she literally can design any themed cookie you could ever dream of! I also made little square jello cups to represent ‘energon cubes’ and doughnuts to represent ‘transformer wheels’. For favors the kids filled up their own little boxes with colored candies and darling transformer suckers by Candied Cakes! You must check out their different themed suckers perfect for party favors!
We did transformer mask face painting which the kiddos absolutely loved! But by far the highlight of the party was the guest appearance from Optimus Prime himself! This was actually my husband and he made the costume by scratch! We are talking weeks of work but it was all worth it to see Beckham’s face completely light up with excitement that the real Optimus came to his party!”
